What Documents Are Needed To Buy A Home?

Unless you’re paying cash, the first step in buying a house is getting pre-qualified through a local lender. Getting pre-qualified is a very fast process that involves answering a short list of questions. The lender will run a credit check, and will help you determine how much you can spend on a house.

Once you’ve found your dream home, you’ll have to gather:
Thirty days of recent paystubs
Your 2 years most recent W-2 forms
Your 2 years most recent tax returns
Two months of copies of bank/asset account statements (all pages)
Copies of photo IDs and social security cards
Contact information for an insurance agent you’ll use to insure the property

In other situations, you may be required to collect additional documentation (e.g. divorce; history that includes bankruptcy; fixed income such as social security).
